Kirkham Hot Springs: A Natural Idaho Retreat
Nestled in the scenic mountains of central Idaho, Kirkham Hot Springs offers a perfect blend of nature, relaxation, and adventure. Admittedly, I avoided this hot spring for a long time because I knew it was popular, but now I think it’s worth the crowds. If you're seeking a rejuvenating soak in hot springs surrounded by stunning wilderness, this hidden gem should be at the top of your list. Here’s everything you need to know before visiting Kirkham Hot Springs (and if you’re looking for more hot springs make sure to check out my road trip guide!)
Location and Getting There
Kirkham Hot Springs is located along the Payette River Scenic Byway (Highway 21), about 40 miles north of Boise and 10 miles south of the town of Lowman.
It’s accessible year-round, though road conditions in winter can be tricky, so always check for road closures during snowy months. The hot springs are well-marked with signs along Highway 21, and there is a large parking area right off the highway. As of 2024 the campground is closed and it is day-use only, you have to walk-in.
What Makes Kirkham Hot Springs Special?
Kirkham Hot Springs is a series of natural hot springs along the banks of the Payette River. These mineral-rich waters have been drawing visitors for centuries, thanks to their healing properties and picturesque setting.
Hot Springs Pools: There are several pools with varying temperatures, ranging from warm to very hot. Most of the pools are shallow, which makes them ideal for a relaxing soak. The main pools sits beside the river, offering stunning views and a serene atmosphere. Be mindful that the temperature in each pool can vary depending on the water flow and weather conditions.
Riverfront Views: What sets Kirkham apart from other hot springs is its location. As you soak in the warm waters, you’ll have views of the Payette River and the surrounding mountain landscape—perfect for unwinding after a day of hiking or exploring.
Natural Environment: The hot springs are nestled in a peaceful, forested area. The sounds of the river and birdsong complete the experience, creating a tranquil and rejuvenating environment. There are also rock formations and beautiful cascades, making the setting even more magical.
Amenities
Kirkham Hot Springs is a free, day-use site, but parking is $5. It is a popular spot, particularly during the summer months, so be prepared for potential crowds. Weekdays or early mornings can offer a more peaceful experience. The area is relatively rustic, so there are no showers or restrooms at the hot springs themselves. However, the day-use area provides a vault toilet.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Kirkham Hot Springs depends on your preferences:
Summer (June - August): This is the peak season, so you can expect more visitors and warmer temperatures. Summer offers the best opportunity for camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities in the area.
Fall (September - October): Early fall offers mild weather and fewer crowds, making it a perfect time to visit. The foliage in the surrounding mountains also adds to the beauty of the area.
Winter (November - March): The hot springs are open year-round, but winter can bring snow, which means you may need to check road conditions and be prepared for colder temperatures. Snow-capped mountains provide a stunning winter backdrop, but access can be more challenging due to icy roads.
Spring (April - May): Spring sees fewer tourists, but temperatures can still be chilly. However, the surrounding scenery comes alive with vibrant wildflowers and rushing river waters from snowmelt. There will likely be fewer pools during this time if the river is high.
What to Bring
Swimwear and Towel: Be sure to pack a towel for drying off after your soak, as well as swimwear as this spring is viewable from the highway. The rocks around the pools can be slippery, so water shoes or flip-flops can also come in handy.
Waterproof Bag or Dry Bag: If you plan on bringing valuables, consider using a waterproof bag to protect your belongings from getting wet.
Snacks and Water: There are not very many amenities nearby, so make sure to bring snacks and plenty of water if you plan to stay for a while. Pack out everything you bring with you.
Warm Clothing: Even on warmer days, the air around the hot springs can be cool, especially in the mornings and evenings. If you plan to camp or spend an extended period of time here, bring layers for warmth.

Tips for Visiting Kirkham Hot Springs
Respect Nature: As a natural hot spring, the environment around Kirkham is fragile. Be sure to pack out all trash and leave no trace.
Temperature Caution: The water in the pools can vary in temperature, so test it before fully submerging. It’s best to start in a cooler pool and gradually move to warmer ones.
